It is crucial to steer clear of these behaviors, as they can easily pave the way for a stroke. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Quang of the Military Medical Academy strongly advises everyone to eliminate these harmful morning routines to aid in stroke prevention.
01. Springing out of bed immediately Leaping out of bed as soon as you open your eyes is a common practice for many. However, health professionals warn that this abrupt movement can significantly raise the likelihood of an early-morning stroke.
Dr. Quang cautions against the habit of jumping up right after waking. During sleep, our parasympathetic nervous system is in control, resulting in a reduced heart rate, gentler heart contractions, and lower blood pressure compared to our waking hours.
When you rise abruptly, the sympathetic nervous system kicks in, forcing the heart to pump harder and faster, which rapidly spikes your blood pressure. This sudden fluctuation places immense stress on the delicate blood vessels in the brain, heightening the risk of a hemorrhagic stroke.
To minimize this danger, Dr. Quang recommends lying still for one to two minutes after waking up. Taking the time to gently massage your face, head, eyes, and neck can help your body transition more smoothly into the day before you actually get out of bed.
02. Drinking a glass of diluted salt water upon waking Many individuals have adopted this routine, believing it offers excellent antiseptic benefits, helps clear bacteria from the mouth, and promotes stronger teeth and gums.
However, consuming salt water first thing in the morning is not highly recommended. High sodium intake is directly linked to elevated blood pressure, kidney issues, and strokes.
Furthermore, when you wake up, your stomach is completely empty. Drinking salt water can irritate the lining of the stomach and esophagus, which may eventually lead to inflammation and ulcers over time.
03. Exercising too early in the morning Working out extremely early can actually be detrimental to your health. Although exercise is highly beneficial, it is best to avoid working out before sunrise when temperatures are at their lowest. Exercising in the cold raises the risk of catching a chill and can trigger severe physical reactions like vasoconstriction, potentially leading to cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, and strokes. Additionally, for individuals with underlying health concerns, early morning workouts can cause significant sleep deprivation, making it harder for the body to function optimally and increasing the chances of injury.
04. Gulping down excessive amounts of water immediately Hydrating as soon as you wake up is a very healthy habit, but it is important to avoid drinking too much water all at once, especially during the winter months.
Chugging a massive volume of water rapidly can place undue strain on your heart. This is particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions, as it can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, a racing heartbeat, or even a stroke. Therefore, it is advisable to limit your initial intake to about 200 to 300ml. Additionally, it is much better to take small sips consistently throughout the morning rather than waiting until you feel completely thirsty.
