A Look Inside the Hectic Life of Australia’s Biggest Family

When Jeni initially met her husband, Ray, she was certain about one thing: she did not want to have children.

“Ray dreamed of having at least four kids. I thought that was wild. Seriously, who has that many kids?” Jeni told Mamamia.

Fast forward more than three decades, and the couple are now the proud parents of 16 children.

Spending $600 weekly on groceries

While Australians might already be familiar with them, the story of the Bonell family is quite astonishing to many. Raising 16 children in Australia, their everyday life is far from ordinary. From orchestrating massive family meals to managing the daily chaos, Jeni and Ray Bonell have mastered the art of multitasking, and they do it all with a great sense of humor.

Based in Toowoomba, Queensland, the Bonell clan includes nine boys and seven girls: Jesse, 35, Brooke, 34, Claire, 31, Natalie, 30, Karl, 28, Samuel, 26, Cameron, 25, Sabrina, 24, Tim, 22, Brandon, 20, Eve, 19, Nate, 17, Rachel, 16, Eric, 15, Damian, 14, and Katelyn, 10.

As comedian Jim Gaffigan famously joked, “You know what it’s like having a fourth kid? Imagine you’re drowning, then someone hands you a baby.” So, what is it actually like to raise 16?

At the helm is Jeni, who spends a staggering $600 a week on groceries just to keep the pantry full. Due to rising costs, that figure recently jumped by another $50. Feeding a family of 18—with eight children still living under their roof—is a monumental task.

Their weekly shopping list is immense: 17 three-liter bottles of milk, 14 boxes of cereal, 45 tubs of yogurt, and four dozen eggs.

“We go through 50 litres of milk every week and consume one to two loaves of bread daily,” Jeni notes.

Getting a good family photo is difficult

Even simple tasks can be a logistical challenge, but for the Bonells, it is just part of the routine.

“Capturing a good family photo is quite the task,” Jeni laughs. “You need a super wide lens, and there’s always someone looking away, making a silly face, or with their eyes shut. But we love those little imperfections in the pictures. They may not be flawless, but that’s what makes it enjoyable.”

Beyond photo sessions, managing the daily whirlwind is a major undertaking. Balancing 16 kids, full-time and part-time jobs, and household upkeep is Jeni and Ray’s reality.

“I used to think life was hectic with little ones,” Jeni admits, “but I’m definitely busier now with older kids.” Coordinating schedules across three different schools, sports, part-time jobs, and studies is a massive effort, yet she wouldn’t trade it. “Life is incredibly busy – but it’s wonderful.”

Their evening routine is a prime example of this dynamic. “Imagine an average-sized family multiplied by eight, and that’s what our evenings look like,” she jokes.

Stretching every dollar

While some nights are chaotic, others run like a well-oiled machine. Regardless, dinner remains a constant anchor. “Dinner is always fantastic,” Jeni says. “Some nights we have eight people at the table, and other nights, it can be over 20!”

To make this work, the Bonells are experts at stretching every dollar. Jeni is known for cooking budget-friendly meals costing between $2 and $10. She regularly shares her grocery hauls on YouTube to help other families manage their food budgets.

“It’s tough for everyone right now,” she observes. “We’re all feeling the budget squeeze.”

To maintain order, Jeni uses a strict chore chart, ensuring that every child aged eight and older pitches in. The kids are also taught to cook at a young age. “Our 12-year-old can prepare a roast dinner for 20 with hardly any help,” Jeni proudly shares.

The household laundry is equally massive. Jeni washes three full loads daily—roughly equal to six standard loads. Grocery shopping requires filling two entire carts every week, prompting her to add, “I always need one of the kids to assist with the load.”

The Bonell Family religion

Financial sacrifices are a regular part of life for the Bonells. As they work to pay off their mortgage, the financial pressure is palpable. Jeni explains, “It’s costly, and you really have to adjust your budget. We all have jobs, and our family doesn’t rely on government support. Still, we face a lot of criticism for having so many children.”

Although they are devout and attend church regularly, Jeni clarifies that their massive brood isn’t solely dictated by their religious beliefs.

“God has a quirky sense of humor,” Jeni laughs. They have zero regrets.

Ray, an electrician, agrees: “It just feels right for us. Everyone has to find what suits them. Having 16 kids isn’t for everyone, but it’s perfect for us.”

Despite the non-stop activity, Ray and Jeni ensure they spend quality time together. “Do I get time alone with my wife? Absolutely! We prioritize each other,” Ray says with a smile. “It’s essential to take care of one another.”

The family dynamic continues to evolve, as their two oldest children have already moved out to start their own families, making Jeni and Ray the proud grandparents of two. With each new addition, the Bonell family’s bond, love, and laughter only multiply.

To keep their home functioning smoothly, they rely heavily on preparation. School uniforms and lunches are sorted the night before, supported by their comprehensive chore rotation.

“We have a roster system, so when a child turns eight, they join the rotation,” Jeni details. “They take turns with chores like sweeping, mopping, setting the table, and helping with meal prep.”

For quick snacks, Jeni frequently shares her go-to recipes on YouTube, including air fryer egg cups and pizza bites, which are simple to prep, freeze perfectly, and work great for school lunches.
