A Mother’s Final Gift: Actress Welcomes Late Son’s Daughter Through Surrogacy
Following the tragic loss of her only son to cancer, a renowned Spanish actress found a profound way to keep his legacy alive: by welcoming a baby girl into the world using his preserved sperm.
Ana Obregón’s extraordinary story has sparked worldwide conversations, blending grief, deep maternal love, and advanced reproductive science in an unprecedented way. The core of this incredible tale is her only biological child, Aless Lequio García, who lost his battle with cancer in May 2020.
Stored sperm In 2018, Ana Obregón’s world was turned upside down when her 27-year-old son, Aless, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, an uncommon type of cancer affecting the bones and soft tissue.
Speaking to Hola! magazine, the 70-year-old television personality explained, “When my son was diagnosed and preparing for chemotherapy, medical professionals recommended he freeze his sperm. This was to safeguard his future fertility in case the treatments compromised it, ensuring he could still become a father.” She added that these samples were safely stored in the United States.
‘The day my child went to heaven’ The actress shared that her son harbored a deep yearning to experience fatherhood, even if he couldn’t physically be there to raise the child himself.
“Aless was already battling severe illness when he confided in us that, should the worst happen, his greatest wish was to leave descendants behind in this world. Even if he was no longer here.”
The devastating loss of Aless in May 2020 shattered Obregón and permanently altered the course of her life.
Reflecting on that dark time, she revealed that the very moment he passed—“the day my child went to heaven”—she made the life-changing decision “to start the surrogacy journey. On that exact day.”
Aless’ daughter “Since that painful day, my sole motivation to wake up every morning has been the mission of bringing Aless’ daughter to life,” she confessed to Hola!, acknowledging that achieving a successful pregnancy took several attempts.
On April 5, 2023, Obregón took to Instagram to share an announcement that left the public in awe.
“My Aless,” she wrote in a deeply touching tribute, accompanied by a picture of the Hola! cover showing her holding a newborn baby—Ana Sandra, her late son’s daughter. “I made a promise to save you from cancer, and I failed you. I swore to bring your daughter into this world, and now she is resting safely in my arms.
“Cradling her gives me an unexplainable sensation, as if I am embracing you once again. I vow to raise her with all the infinite love in my heart, and I know you will be guiding me from above.”
She finished her poignant post with: “You are the love of my life in heaven, and your daughter is the love of my life on earth.”
‘Wanted from earth and from heaven’ The newborn, affectionately called Anita, was brought into the world using an egg donor and the sperm Aless had frozen prior to his cancer treatments.

In her exclusive interview with Hola!, Obregón stressed that this heavily debated decision wasn’t a sudden “whim,” but rather fulfilling her “son’s final wish and testament.”
“I will not entertain or accept any opposing views. The only opinions that hold weight are from parents who have had to bury their own child. They are the only ones who can genuinely comprehend my pain,” she declared, emphasizing that she has “nothing to hide.”
“It is a miracle, a source of immense pride. Why would I ever conceal a blessing from God?” Obregón stated. “She is the daughter of a hero. She is the most fiercely desired baby on the planet, longed for by both earth and heaven,” the former Who’s the Boss? star said of Ana—who bears the names of “her grandmother, her great-grandmother, and her great-great-grandmother.”
‘I have been reborn’ The devoted grandmother promised that as Anita grows up, she will be told all about her father—his identity, his courageous fight against his illness, and his profound desire to have a child of his own.

“Biologically, this little girl is my granddaughter, but legally, she is my daughter,” she clarified. “She is Aless’ daughter, and as she matures, I will make sure she knows her father was a true hero, so she can understand exactly who he was and feel incredibly proud of him,” Obregón shared.
“When she reaches an age of understanding, I will sit her down and say, ‘Listen, your daddy wanted you more than anything, but sadly, he isn’t here with us. He is in heaven. He yearned for you so deeply, and now you are here, my sweet girl.'”
She concluded: “I have come back. I have risen again. I am reborn. I essentially died on May 13, 2020, and I was brought back to life on March 20, 2023, just like that.”
