A Touching Final Wish: A Beloved Student Sings Maria’s Favorite Hymn in Her Last Days

We all grow older, and eventually our lives come to an end.

I’ve never been especially afraid of death itself; to me, it feels like a natural and even beautiful part of existence. What truly terrifies me is the idea of aging to the point where I lose my independence.

The thought of relying entirely on others—being unable to use the bathroom alone or even recall my own children’s names—is a future I hope never to face.

Maria spent her final days in a care facility, fully aware that her time was drawing to a close.

After a lifetime devoted to teaching voice and piano, she longed to be surrounded by music once more.

By a stroke of luck, one of her former students happened to work at the care home in Austinburg, Ohio.

Joshua Woodard had been under her guidance since he was just 9 years old, creating a bond that lasted decades.

As the end approached, Maria wished more than anything to hear the hymn “How Great Thou Art” one last time.

Joshua, of course, didn’t hesitate to fulfill her final request.

Using the lyrics displayed on his phone, he sang her cherished hymn with emotional sincerity.

Even more touching was the fact that Joshua had known Maria since childhood.

“Hospice workers are like angels, but this particular aide is truly extraordinary,” said Marti Adkins Redmond.

“Maria taught piano and voice for many years, and this aide, Joshua Woodard, was one of her young students. Hospice workers truly are remarkable people.”

Maria’s sister-in-law managed to record the deeply moving moment on camera.

Sadly, Maria has since passed away, which makes the video even more poignant.
