A Tragic Louisiana Family Shooting: The Shocking Case of Shamar Elkins

An unimaginable tragedy unfolded in Louisiana this past Sunday when a man, identified as Shamar Elkins, fatally shot eight children—seven of his own and their cousin. The suspected gunman was subsequently killed by law enforcement during a vehicle pursuit. Newly surfaced information indicates that Elkins had made disturbing comments regarding “demons” just weeks prior to the massacre.

Shortly after 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, Shreveport police dispatched units to a home following reports of a domestic dispute, according to police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon.

Upon entering the Shreveport residence, authorities discovered the bodies of the eight children. Bordelon noted that the majority of the young victims were shot in the head as they slept. Elkins’s estranged wife and another woman, believed to be his girlfriend, also sustained severe gunshot wounds during the rampage. Heartbreaking details revealed that one eight-year-old victim attempted to flee across the roof before being gunned down, while State Representative Tammy Phelps noted that other children desperately tried to escape through a back door.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed the deceased were three boys and five girls, ranging from 3 to 11 years old, correcting earlier police estimates that placed their ages between 1 and 14. Their heartbroken mothers identified the victims as Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

“I just don’t know what to say. My heart is just taken aback,” Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed to NBC News. “I just cannot begin to imagine how such an event can occur.”

Addressing the press, State Rep. Phelps added, “I can’t even imagine what the police officers, first responders actually dealt with when they got here today.”

Crystal Brown, whose cousin was one of the injured women, told the Associated Press that Elkins and his wife were going through a separation and had a court date scheduled for that Monday. She remembered the victims as “happy kids, very friendly, very sweet,” lamenting, “He murdered his children. He shot his wife.”

Elkins’s life ended in a shootout with police as he attempted a carjacking. According to a database maintained by the AP and Northeastern University, this Shreveport tragedy marks the most lethal mass shooting in the United States since an incident in a Chicago suburb in January 2024.

Suspect Shamar Elkins’s Chilling Remarks Weeks Before the Attack

The New York Times reported that Elkins had been grappling with severe “dark thoughts” in the weeks leading up to the killings. During an Easter Sunday phone call with his mother, Mahelia Elkins, and stepfather, Marcus Jackson, he expressed a desire to divorce his wife and end his own life.

Jackson recalled trying to encourage his stepson, telling The New York Times, “I told him, ‘You can beat stuff, man. I don’t care what you’re going through, you can beat it.’” However, Elkins gave an ominous reply: “Some people don’t come back from their demons.”

Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the family during this horrifying tragedy.
