Beloved Pop Legend Ends His Touring Career at 89

People often say that even the most wonderful chapters eventually close, and that sentiment now applies to yet another cherished voice from the music world. Sadly, we have more difficult news to share—this time involving the retirement of a legendary pop figure.

Johnny Mathis, now 89, has enchanted audiences for decades. Unfortunately, he has chosen to step away from the stage after this summer’s shows, citing age-related difficulties, including increasing memory issues.

Mathis is currently completing dates on the Voice of Romance Tour, which had originally been scheduled to run through the spring. Any performances planned for June 2025 and beyond have already been canceled.

A statement from his team explained:
“As many of you know, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. With sincere regret, we must announce that advancing age and worsening memory challenges have led to his retirement from touring and live performances.”

A few remaining concerts are still scheduled in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and California, with his final performance set for May 18 in Englewood, New Jersey. His team confirmed that refunds for any canceled dates will be issued through the original point of purchase.

Born in 1935 in Texas and raised in San Francisco, Johnny Mathis has long stood as one of America’s most treasured musical artists, renowned for his smooth, romantic vocal style.

He began singing early in life and quickly drew attention for his extraordinary abilities. He was also a standout track-and-field athlete before ultimately deciding to pursue music full-time. A demo recording eventually reached a Columbia Records executive, leading to his signing with the label in 1956.

Mathis went on to release classics such as “Chances Are” and “It’s Not for Me to Say,” and he was among the first artists to issue a greatest hits album—an innovation that left a lasting imprint on the industry. He also achieved an astonishing 490 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts.

Over his lifetime, Mathis has sold more than 350 million records worldwide and released roughly 70 albums. His achievements have earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.

May he rest in peace.
