Beyond the Record: How Gary Turner Turned a Rare Disorder into a Global Inspiration

Gary Turner of the United Kingdom has held one of the most astonishing Guinness World Records for nearly a quarter of a century — all because of a condition that transformed his body into a medical marvel. 🌍✨ Known worldwide as “the man with the stretchiest skin,” Gary’s remarkable ability is far more than a party gag. It comes from a rare disorder that makes his skin unlike anyone else’s.

His story began in October 1998, when Gary shocked judges and onlookers by stretching the skin on his stomach an incredible 15 centimeters — nearly six inches. 😲 The following year, he surpassed even that feat, extending it to 15.8 centimeters. No challenger has succeeded in taking the title from him since.

The reason behind his extraordinary skin is a rare genetic condition called Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which affects the connective tissues responsible for giving the skin, ligaments, and internal organs structure and stability. In people with EDS, collagen — the protein that gives skin its firmness — forms abnormally, resulting in skin that is soft, elastic, and extraordinarily stretchable.

Gary first realized he was different when he was a child. “I was about eight,” he recalled with a grin. “I was messing around in class and pulled the skin on my neck. My friend looked stunned, and when I asked, ‘Can you do this?’ he said no. That’s when I knew something was unusual.” 😄

Contrary to what many imagine, Gary says stretching his skin doesn’t hurt. “There’s no pain at all,” he explains. “Just a slight pulling sensation. People expect me to flinch, but to me, it feels as normal as scratching an itch.”

Over time, Gary’s extraordinary ability turned him into a global curiosity. He has appeared on television, at live shows, and in medical documentaries — not only to entertain but also to educate the public about Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome. While he can make audiences gasp or burst out laughing, he’s equally dedicated to raising awareness and promoting compassion for individuals living with EDS. ❤️

And as if one world record weren’t enough, Gary added another Guinness title to his name — the most clothespins attached to a human face. 😅 Thanks to his unusually flexible skin and high tolerance, he has broken his own record several times. The last time he did it was in 2013 in Istanbul, where he calmly clipped dozens of clothespins across his face as the crowd erupted in cheers.

Despite all the attention, Gary remains grounded and good-natured. He often jokes that his skin is his “superpower,” but behind that humor is someone who owns his uniqueness with pride. “Everyone’s different in some way,” he says with a smile. “Mine just stretches a bit more than others.” 💪😄

Today, Gary Turner continues to inspire people around the world — not only as the man with the stretchiest skin, but as a reminder that our differences are what make us remarkable. His legacy isn’t only recorded in centimeters, but in courage, curiosity, and a joyful embrace of who he is. 🌟
