When Carrie Underwood’s performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration didn’t unfold as expected, an insider revealed that she was “furious” and had a “mini hissy fit,” leading to her being dubbed the “inauguration day diva.”
On January 20, the country music sensation took to the grand stage in Washington D.C. to sing “America the Beautiful” with the Armed Forces Chorus and the United States Naval Academy Glee Club.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly. When the music failed to play, the American Idol alum quickly adapted, transforming an awkward moment into a showcase of her vocal talent.
Taking charge, Underwood, 41, engaged the audience, urging them to join in: “If you know the words, help me out here,” she encouraged.
Her spontaneous a cappella performance was met with applause, reaffirming her status as one of the leading stars in country music.
‘Inauguration day diva’
Backstage, the atmosphere was quite different for the star, often referred to as the “inauguration day diva.”
As reported by the Daily Mail, she was proudly sharing with anyone who would listen that Trump had personally invited her to perform.
However, this special invitation didn’t shield her from a few behind-the-scenes challenges.
Initially, the Grammy-winning artist found herself in a situation where she had to wear a ready-made dress instead of the luxurious gown she had anticipated from “the administration or the designer,” according to an anonymous source speaking to the U.S. Sun.
“She was hoping for something custom-made, or at the very least, something couture,” the insider revealed. “Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Carrie ended up in a $300 off-the-rack dress and discounted shoes.”
Limited guests
The “Somethin’ Bad” singer faced some unexpected changes, including a significantly smaller entourage than she had expected. With the event shifting indoors, the guest list was reduced, which restricted the number of people she could bring along – a situation that left her feeling quite displeased, according to an insider who spoke to the Sun.
“She arranged for a large security team and insisted on having a group of 20 with her. Naturally, she also requested tickets for her family and friends in addition to that,” another source shared with the Daily Mail.
But that wasn’t the end of it.
Staging a disaster
Despite her reduced team, technical issues, and wardrobe letdowns, sources indicate that Underwood was also unhappy with how her performance was staged.

According to the Daily Mail, the singer of “Jesus, Take the Wheel” was reportedly “furious” about not receiving the “same level of respect” as other artists, such as Lady Gaga, who performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Joe Biden’s inauguration in January 2021.
A source revealed that Carrie was unhappy with her performance at the event, mainly because of the cramped space she was given, which made her feel uncomfortable. “Her anxiety was high during the performance, and she believed she didn’t get the same respect or admiration that previous performers like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga had enjoyed.” Beyoncé sang the national anthem at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013.
The insider went on to say, “She’s accustomed to performing in large venues with ample space. At this event, she felt like she was just in a small room with people surrounding her and a microphone, which affected the acoustics.”
The source added, “She felt rushed in and out and had a bit of a meltdown afterward.”
Despite the challenges at her show in Washington D.C., Carrie Underwood managed to deliver a stunning vocal performance that resonated with both fans and critics.
