Clannad’s Legendary Voice Falls Silent: Celtic Music’s First Lady Dies at 73

A legendary figure in Irish music has passed away at the age of 73. Fellow icons, including her sister Enya and U2 frontman Bono, have been at the forefront of paying homage to the woman who introduced Celtic melodies to a global audience.

Renowned Irish artists Enya and Bono have spearheaded a wave of heartfelt tributes dedicated to Moya Brennan, the esteemed lead vocalist of Clannad, following her death at 73.

Originally named Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin, the celebrated singer and harp player led her family’s group for over half a century. She was widely celebrated as the “first lady of Celtic music” for her role in sharing Ireland’s unique sound with the rest of the world.

As the oldest of nine children, Brennan disclosed in 2020 that she was battling pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic condition, and was confronting the potential need for a double lung transplant.

Ten years after founding Clannad alongside her brothers in 1970, Brennan invited her younger sister, Enya, to join the traditional Irish folk ensemble, a move that preceded Enya’s own remarkably triumphant solo career.

Taking to Facebook, Enya shared, “It is with a deep and terrible sadness that I must announce the death of my beloved sister, Máire.”

She added, “Not only was she my sister, she was a dear and close friend. I would ask for privacy at the time.”

The tragic news was announced by her devastated brothers, Pól and Ciarán. They had originally formed the group with Brennan and their twin uncles, Noel and Pádraig Duggan, performing in Leo’s Tavern, a pub owned by their parents.

“We are completely heartbroken at the passing of our dearest sister Máire (Moya). She crossed over last night at home in Donegal surrounded by family and has now joined Pádraig & Noel across the veil,” her brothers stated in a touching message.

They added, “Her voice was the signature sound of Clannad and will live on forever.”

Clannad gained international recognition beyond Ireland’s borders in the early 1980s. Their rise to fame was propelled by providing theme music for popular television programs, such as Robin of Sherwood and Harry’s Game, a series set amidst the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

In 1999, a completely new audience was introduced to her pure, angelic vocals when she collaborated with electronic music producer Chicane on the massive worldwide hit, “Saltwater.”

Furthermore, Brennan’s distinct voice graced the musical scores of major motion pictures, including the 2004 film King Arthur.

Throughout her career, she teamed up with numerous legendary musicians, such as Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, and Bono, who famously duetted with her on Clannad’s hit song ‘In A Lifetime’.

“Otherworldly voice. She sang like an angel. She walked through this world like an angel, and now she’s back with her own kind. We love you, Moya,” Bono wrote in a tribute shared on the band’s social media platforms.

Andrea Corr, lead singer of another prominent Irish family band, also offered her respects to the beloved vocalist.

“The most beautiful voice and spirit … A blessing to have had time with you. Dear Moya. Rest in peace. Praying for your beloved family and friends’ comfort,” Corr expressed.

In 2023, Brennan reunited with her brothers to perform across Australia for Clannad’s official ‘In A Lifetime’ farewell theatre tour.
