Former Bandmate of John Lennon and Paul McCartney Dies at 84

According to the Daily Mail, the family of Len Garry—an early bandmate of John Lennon and Paul McCartney in The Quarrymen—has announced his passing at the age of 84.

During the 1950s, Garry was a member of the skiffle ensemble alongside his adolescent schoolmates, Lennon and McCartney. This very group would eventually transform into the legendary Beatles by 1960.

The musician, who received a dementia diagnosis in 2024, had recently been admitted to the hospital due to a chest infection. Medical staff subsequently permitted him to be discharged to his residence, allowing him to pass his final days in the comforting presence of his family.

In an emotional tribute, his daughter Jane recounted the events:

“My Dad, Len Garry, peacefully departed at home early this morning. When the physician informed us he only had a few hours left, my immediate response was: ‘He needs to go home.'”

“The doctor agreed to this. I rode along in the ambulance to bring him back. My mother, my sister, my brother-in-law, and I gathered around Dad’s bed. We held his hand, spoke to him, and expressed our deep love and pride as he peacefully slipped away and drew his final breaths.”

“I love you, Dad, and I will mourn you for the rest of my days. I am completely heartbroken.”

The Daily Mail notes that Garry was a student at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, which is where his path crossed with Paul McCartney’s. As youths, they played together in The Quarrymen, entertaining at school social events and local skiffle contests. The group’s roster later expanded to include George Harrison.

Notably, Garry was part of The Quarrymen’s inaugural show at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club. Following this era, the band experienced several personnel and name modifications before finally becoming The Beatles.

In 1997, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Quarrymen, Garry teamed up with the other living members who were not part of The Beatles. The reunited group went on to tour the United Kingdom and eventually put out four collaborative albums.

At this time, it is not known if Garry’s character will appear in the forthcoming 2028 biographical project, The Beatles: A Four-Film Cinematic Event. This ambitious release features four interconnected movies—each narrated from the viewpoint of a different bandmate—detailing their journey from ambitious Liverpool youths in the early ’60s to international icons, concluding with their 1970 split. The core cast includes Paul Mescal playing Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn portraying George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan taking on the role of Ringo Starr.
