Groundbreaking Icon Passes Away, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Legacy of an Icon: World’s Oldest Professional Model Daphne Selfe Passes Away at 97

The fashion world is mourning the loss of Daphne Selfe, the legendary figure recognized as the oldest professional model on Earth, who has died at the age of 97.

Her passing occurred on March 21, 2026, according to a statement published on her official Instagram page.

A Career That Spanned Decades

Reports from People indicate that Selfe’s children confirmed she passed away peacefully within a residential care facility. Her dedication to her craft remained steadfast until the very end; only months prior, in June 2025, she carried out her final professional assignment by attending a Vogue luncheon held during the Royal Ascot.

In a moving tribute, her family described her final moments: “She rose peacefully and purposely towards the light, as only the sensational model in her knew how, in the sunshine of a beautiful spring equinox afternoon.”

The family highlighted the poetic nature of her final working engagement at the Royal Ascot Ladies Day. “What a way to bow out—fashion, people, and horses… her main loves,” they shared, adding that her influence would “continue to inspire, always and forever.”

The farewell message was signed by her three children—Mark, Claire, and Rose—and her four grandchildren—Jack, Alec, Grace, and Robin.

From Department Store to the Global Stage

Born in London in 1928 and raised in the county of Berkshire, Selfe’s entry into the fashion industry happened at age 21. She was discovered by chance while working at a local department store.

Following her marriage in 1954, she prioritized her family life and stepped back from full-time modeling, though she maintained a minor presence through occasional commercials and small roles in films.

The Historic Second Act

The trajectory of her life changed significantly following the death of her husband in 1997. In her 70s, an age when many consider retirement, Selfe returned to the modeling world and achieved unprecedented levels of fame. She became a fixture at major events like London Fashion Week and secured a contract with a top-tier modeling agency.

Selfe often remarked on the irony of her late-life fame, stating she “had more modeling success since I was 70 than I ever did when I was 20.” She attributed much of this success to authenticity, noting, “I became successful when I embraced my age and went gray. It made me more striking.”

A Life Lived Fully

Her philosophy on longevity was rooted in joy and social connection. In a 2023 interview, she spoke of her simple pleasures: “I like a glass of champagne. Only occasionally, if it’s somebody’s birthday. Or my birthday.” She was a staunch advocate for maintaining a social circle, explaining, “I’m a great one for socializing, and getting my friends together, even if it’s only for a coffee. And I do like to have a party.”

Beyond the runway, Daphne was a Guinness World Record holder and a recipient of the British Empire Medal. In 2015, she extended her legacy by founding the Daphne Selfe Academy, a platform designed to mentor and empower women of all ages seeking a future in fashion.

Her spirit remained vibrant well into her tenth decade. During an encounter with Prince William, she famously informed him that she had no intentions of retiring—a sentiment the Prince reportedly described as “amazing.”
