As his final moments approached, a nurse informed the family that the time was close, prompting Cindy to ensure that all of Landon’s children could gather to say their goodbyes. Each of his children, all with unique personalities and paths in life, navigated the weight of the impending loss in their own personal ways.
His son Christopher was only sixteen years old when his father passed away. A year later, he began to speak openly about his grief and the profound impact of losing a father during such a pivotal time in his adolescence.
Christopher recalled the specific day he learned of his father’s terminal illness. He had been feeling particularly successful after doing well on an English exam, only to have his world upended when his sisters shared the news. Reflecting on that visceral moment, Christopher told People: “I could feel every nerve in my body like it was all made up.”

Seven months after losing his father, Christopher began to process his sorrow more publicly. His mother, stepmother, and siblings all leaned on one another during this collective healing process. Christopher carried a weight of regret for not having the opportunity to apologize to his father for the typical tensions of youth. Michael’s final words to his wife, Cindy, were a simple and powerful, “I love you.”
Since that loss, Christopher noted a shift in his perspective on mortality. “Previously, when I thought about death, I would say, ‘I don’t want to die at all!’ But now I think the worst that could happen is that I’ll see Dad again,” he shared with People.
Determined to honor his father’s memory, Christopher vowed to live an authentic life. At the age of 24, this commitment led him to come out publicly regarding his sexuality. Despite his father’s immense fame and the pressures of his teenage years, Christopher had struggled with his identity and the fear of external judgment. He worried that his truth might negatively impact his father’s public image, recalling his fear that headlines might mockingly read “Little House on the Fairy” or “Highway to Hell.”
Christopher found the prospect of coming out to his family daunting, particularly due to his mother’s Christian faith. When he finally confided in her, she initially reacted with tears and a sense of guilt, but she soon moved toward a place of total acceptance and support. Christopher felt it was vital to challenge his mother’s preconceived notions, and he was pleasantly surprised to find that other family members were more welcoming than he had dared to hope.
Later, Christopher learned from Cindy that his father might have already sensed the truth. In a 1999 interview with The Advocate, Cindy recalled Michael mentioning his suspicions casually: “I think he’s gay, but I’m sure he’ll figure it out himself.”
Today, Christopher has stayed true to his promise of living authentically. He has joyfully welcomed two sons, Beau Landon-Morris and August Kelly Landon-Morris, into his family. While he still faces challenges, he does so with the confidence and support of his loved ones.
