How the Sprouse Twins Learned to Embrace Their Differences Growing Up
The Diverging Paths and Enduring Bond of Cole and Dylan Sprouse
From the very beginning, Cole and Dylan Sprouse showcased remarkably different personalities. By the time they reached their first birthday, the twins had already made their television debut on ABC’s Grace Under Fire, sharing the role of Brett Butler’s son, Patrick. Ever since that early milestone, the brothers have largely remained side-by-side in both their personal lives and careers.
In a feature published by PEOPLE back in 1999, their mother, Melanie Wright, explained that she instilled the same core values in both boys—focusing on chores, manners, prayer, and responsibility—while simultaneously pushing them to embrace their unique individualities.
Dylan, who arrived into the world 15 minutes before Cole, naturally gravitated toward a more outgoing demeanor. He was an avid Beastie Boys listener and dreamed of becoming a stuntman, a goal sparked by Melanie’s boyfriend at the time, Spike Silver. Conversely, Cole possessed a more reserved nature, harboring a fondness for geology and the music of Neil Young.
A Shared Talent
Despite their differences, a mutual gift for acting tied them together. Adam Sandler, who shared the screen with the twins in the hit comedy Big Daddy, once confessed to Melanie that their acting skills were “so good it makes me sick to my stomach.” Even as 7-year-olds, the duo displayed a distinct sense of humor. When asked to name a favorite trait about his brother, Dylan jokingly replied, “He’s a nut.” Cole retorted with, “Nothing. Except he’s really nice.”
The siblings eventually skyrocketed to massive fame on the Disney Channel, anchoring hit series like The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and The Suite Life on Deck. Post-Disney, their career trajectories diverged: Cole took on the long-running role of Jughead Jones in Riverdale for seven seasons and recently starred in Lisa Frankenstein alongside Kathryn Newton. Meanwhile, Dylan carved out a space in romantic dramas, starring in films such as After We Collided, Beautiful Disaster, and Beautiful Wedding.

Will We See Them on Screen Together Again?
While they haven’t shared the screen together in over ten years (their last joint project was in 2012), a future collaboration isn’t entirely off the table. During a July 31 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Dylan mentioned he would be open to working with his brother again, although he noted that high-quality roles written specifically for twins are quite rare.
“They’re usually pretty cheesy,” Dylan remarked playfully. “I remember Cole being salty about Tom Hardy playing twins in Legend. He doesn’t love it when one actor plays two real people. I was like, ‘Cole, I don’t think we were on their shortlist for that role anyway.’”
Life Beyond the Spotlight
Away from Hollywood, the brothers continue to evolve personally. Dylan married model Barbara Palvin in Hungary on July 15, 2023. Cole is currently in a relationship with model Ari Fournier. Even with their separate endeavors, their brotherly bond remains tight.
Making an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera, in April 2024, Cole spoke warmly of Dylan and Barbara, describing the couple as “so wonderful” and “perfect together.” When the topic of starting a family came up, he chuckled, saying, “They’re taking their time. It’ll be nice, though—maybe then my dad will stop asking me when I’m having kids.”
