The pair of tiny indentations located on the lower back, right above the glutes, are frequently referred to as Venus dimples on women and Apollo dimples on men. In medical terms, they are known as sacral or lumbosacral dimples. These marks show up exactly where the spine connects with the pelvis, specifically at the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS).

These small dips develop naturally due to the skin in that specific spot being directly connected to the ligaments underneath, resulting in a subtle depression.

Historically, it was believed that these dimples were strictly a matter of genetics—meaning you were either born with them or you weren’t. Although genetics remain a major factor, elements such as muscle tone and overall body fat percentage can dictate how prominent they appear. Individuals possessing lower body fat and greater muscle definition usually display them much more distinctively.
