Netflix’s Most Shocking Movie Yet Leaves Viewers Horrified by Its Disturbing Scenes
Audiences are completely stunned by what some are calling Netflix’s “most explicit movie ever,” featuring scenes that have been described as “absolutely disgusting.” This comes after the streaming giant recently acquired the rights to showcase Alfonso Cuarón’s highly praised 2001 Mexican coming-of-age feature, Y Tu Mamá También.
The narrative centers on the bond between two teenagers, Tenoch (played by Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael García Bernal), who are wrapping up their high school years and pondering their futures.
While their girlfriends are vacationing in Europe for the summer, the duo crosses paths with an older woman, Luisa (Maribel Verdú). They impulsively ask her to accompany them on a drive from Mexico City to a stunning, secluded beach in Oaxaca.
Unexpectedly, she accepts their invitation. What starts out as a lighthearted road trip soon evolves into a profound experience, as the three travelers develop deep emotional and intimate ties.
Internet Reactions to the “Explicit” Film
Often referred to as “the original Challengers,” the picture has polarized viewers because of its intense, graphic nature, featuring passionate threesomes, sexual awakening, and heavy emotional undertones.
A segment of the audience was definitely taken by surprise. According to TVF, one commentator labeled it an “absolutely disgusting movie,” while someone else questioned: “Wtf is this doing on Netflix. I can’t imagine what it would do to the sensibilities of unsuspecting families opening it for a mindless Sunday viewing.”
Over on X, another viewer joked: “Just watched Y Tu Mama Tambien for the first time. Expected it to be the horniest movie I’d ever seen and it was somehow even more horny than that.”
On the flip side, plenty of viewers were thrilled with the cinematic experience. One fan gushed: “Watched y tu mamá también last night god that was so incredible so good.”
Another chimed in: “Can’t believe I’ve only just watched Y tu mamá también. A masterpiece !”
Censorship Battles, Reviews, and Triumph
Upon its initial release, the feature was slapped with an NC-17 rating in the US and an 18+ classification in Mexico—a ruling that the creators notably fought against in the legal system.
In spite of the uproar regarding its adult themes, the movie garnered massive critical praise, securing a stellar 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside glowing professional reviews.
Speaking with The New York Times, director Alfonso Cuarón shared the deeper meaning behind the provocative imagery: “We wanted the sex scenes to get a point across about these characters and about the social elements we were playing with, like class and the conceptions of masculinity that these characters have.”
Co-writer and brother Carlos Cuarón further elaborated on the film’s magic: “That portrait of adolescence with its failures and virtues, the narrator who doesn’t narrate but contextualizes things and helped us avoid explanatory scenes, the enormous chemistry between Diego and Gael and the counterpoint that Maribel provided were some of the many factors.”
He also noted their surprise at the project’s reception: “None of us who made it thought it would have such success. When we wrote the screenplay, we didn’t know who would dare make it,” he stated.
