Charlize Theron is opening up once more regarding the terrifying evening that permanently altered her existence—the night her mom fatally shot her dad in an act of self-defense.
During a deeply moving recent sit-down with Town & Country, the Academy Award-winning star looked back on that incident and discussed how the profound trauma motivated her to transform into one of Hollywood’s most vocal champions combatting gender-based violence.
“I understand why people draw a line between that event and the work I do,” Theron stated. “But it’s far more complicated than just one night of trauma.”
The Mad Max: Fury Road lead, currently 48 years old, clarified that violence targeted at women represents a crisis reaching way past her own private ordeal. “Even without that event, gender-based violence is everywhere — in South Africa, where I grew up, and across the world,” she contributed. “As a woman, you can’t ignore it.”
The devastating incident took place in 1991 in Benoni, South Africa, back when Theron was a mere 15 years of age. Her dad, Charles, arrived at their residence heavily intoxicated and carrying a firearm. “My dad was so drunk he shouldn’t have been able to stand,” she remembered during a 2019 conversation with NPR. “He came into the house with a gun and started shooting through the door.”
During that terrifying moment, Charlize and her mom, Gerda, had barricaded themselves inside the teenager’s bedroom, bracing their weight against the door while her dad attempted to violently force his way in. “He shot three times through the door,” she recounted. “By some miracle, not a single bullet struck us.”
Theron characterized her dad as “a very sick man” who struggled with alcohol addiction for many years. “I knew him in only one way — he was always an alcoholic,” she revealed. “It was a hopeless situation. Living with an addict means you wake up every day not knowing what’s coming next.”
To Theron, that intense unpredictability inflicted permanent emotional wounds. “The day-to-day fear stays with you more than the violence itself,” she admitted. “It stays with you — something that embeds itself in you for the rest of your life,” she expressed.
That horrific ordeal ignited Theron’s lifelong dedication to assisting others trapped in abusive environments. Utilizing her organization, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, she helped launch the #TogetherForHer campaign in 2020 to aid women and children impacted by domestic abuse—particularly amidst the COVID-19 quarantine measures.
“COVID pushed domestic violence to terrifying levels,” Theron mentioned to Forbes back in 2020. “What was meant to be a time of safety at home became a death sentence for many women and children trapped with abusers.”
Serving as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, Theron consistently leverages her massive influence to highlight women’s struggles, systemic racial disparities, and basic human rights. “It’s not just about awareness,” she declared. “It’s about action — finding real ways to create change.”
To Theron, the agony of her history stays profoundly intimate, yet it simultaneously fuels her life’s mission. “What happened in my family will always be part of me,” she noted. “But it’s what I do with that experience that defines who I am today.”
