TikTok Star Dies Following Complications From Cosmetic Surgery

The Tragic Passing of Rachel Tussey: A Community Mourns a Life Cut Short

Rachel Tussey, a 47-year-old mother from Ohio and a prominent creator on TikTok, has passed away due to complications following a cosmetic “mommy makeover,” according to a statement from her family’s legal representative.

Tussey died on March 17 at a hospice facility, nearly two weeks after her family made the difficult decision to remove her from life support, attorney Bernie Layne informed The Cincinnati Enquirer. She leaves behind her husband and three children.

In a shared statement, her family expressed their profound grief: “It is with deep regret and sadness that we share the news of Rachel’s passing. The outpouring of support, from our community and beyond, has provided us with so much comfort… We ask that our family be given time and space to grieve our unimaginable loss.”

A Digital Legacy Interrupted

Under the handle “midlifeunmuted,” Tussey had cultivated a significant following on TikTok, where she dedicated her platform to sharing empowering content for women navigating their 40s. With a community of over 70,000 followers, she frequently celebrated being “over 40 & fabulous,” documenting various aspects of her life, including the lead-up to her surgery.

On February 25, the day she was scheduled for the procedure, she uploaded a final video from her hospital bed. “I’m really looking forward to this next chapter,” she told her audience. “If you’re a praying person, I will absolutely take your prayers.”

Details of the Incident

Tussey underwent an abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, at the JourneyLite Surgery Center in Evendale. The procedure was performed by Dr. Shahryar Tork.

Her husband, Jeremy Tussey, noted that the surgical portion appeared to conclude without issue. He recalled being able to speak with her during the initial recovery phase before her health took a sudden and drastic turn. In a TikTok video that has since been viewed millions of times, Jeremy described how her complexion turned pale before she became completely unresponsive.

He mentioned that she had been administered pain medications, specifically Dilaudid and fentanyl. Although Narcan was used in an attempt to stabilize her, it failed to reverse her condition. Tussey was subsequently transported to Bethesda North Hospital.

“She was without oxygen for over six minutes… she’s brain dead,” Jeremy stated in his video. “To me, it looks like incompetency. Somebody dropped the ball and killed my wife.” On March 5, following reports from doctors of minimal brain activity, the decision was made to withdraw life support.

Investigations and Allegations

A GoFundMe campaign established for the family has already exceeded $35,000 in donations. On the page, Jeremy suggested that “medical neglect” played a role in the tragedy. The family’s attorney confirmed that Tussey suffered a “permanent anoxic brain injury,” a condition resulting from the brain being deprived of oxygen for an extended duration.

“Rachel Tussey suffered a permanent anoxic brain injury, for which she will never recover,” Layne stated, adding that the legal team is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her care. The family added that the actions of every medical professional involved will be “thoroughly analyzed and investigated.”

The Surgeon’s Response

Dr. Shahryar Tork has released statements defending the surgical procedure itself. “Rachel’s surgery was completed successfully and without complications,” he asserted, stating she was in “excellent condition” when she was transitioned to the recovery area.

Dr. Tork clarified that post-operative care was the responsibility of the staff at the independent outpatient center rather than his personal team. “This is an unimaginable tragedy. I am devastated for Rachel Tussey and her family,” Tork said, expressing his hope that the full facts would eventually surface. He also confirmed that he has ceased performing surgeries at that specific facility.

The JourneyLite Surgery Center has not yet issued a public comment regarding the incident.

Remembering Rachel

Those close to Tussey remember her as a generous and compassionate individual who was deeply committed to her community. Her GoFundMe page describes her as someone who “loved adventure, cherished her family deeply, and lived as an example of what community and compassion should look like.” Notably, she had previously organized significant donation drives to provide relief supplies to victims of natural disasters.

Understanding the Risks

A “mommy makeover” typically refers to a suite of procedures that includes an abdominoplasty to remove excess skin and tighten abdominal muscles. While nearly 160,000 of these procedures are performed annually in the United States, medical experts remind the public that all major surgeries carry inherent risks, particularly during the critical recovery period.
