‘Wheel of Fortune’ Contestant Loses Car After Failing to Solve Brutal Puzzle
Fans of “Wheel of Fortune” are expressing intense frustration after a mother from Massachusetts barely missed out on a brand-new car. Her devastating loss was caused by a puzzle that many viewers are slamming as one of the most “evil” and difficult the game show has featured in a long time.
Hailing from Brockton, Massachusetts, Jess Graham completely commanded the January 26 episode. She breezed through the majority of the competition, easily securing her spot as the main contender for the Bonus Round. However, as the clock wound down, a highly difficult phrase—missing a mere two letters—blocked her from driving away in a new vehicle.

Graham, who grew up in a family of avid skiers and remains dedicated to the sport, brought both a fierce competitive edge and a warm personality to the stage, mentioning her life as a wife and mother of three. Right from the start, she proved she was a serious competitor. She easily won the first two toss-up puzzles, instantly pocketing $3,000 and establishing her dominance for the rest of the evening.
Competing against her were Rocky Brown from Chicago, who shared his goal of appearing on the reality show “Survivor,” and Duane Chapman, a passionate basketball enthusiast from Lubbock, Texas. Brown started strong in the first major puzzle with several correct letter guesses, but a single wrong choice halted his momentum. Taking advantage of the slip-up, Chapman correctly guessed “High School Yearbook Photo” to claim his initial $1,000.

It wasn’t long before Graham extended her lead significantly. She flawlessly solved the “Before & After” category with the answer “Sparkling Water Taxi,” netting more than $10,000 in a single turn. Shortly after, she claimed the coveted “Year of Fun” wedge and decisively answered the Prize Puzzle, “Happy Smiling Faces.” This victory earned her a trip to Finland and boosted her winnings beyond the $22,000 mark.
She carried this winning streak right into the Triple Toss-Ups. By successfully guessing two out of the three “Song Lyrics” puzzles, Graham added an extra $4,000 to her bank. Chapman managed to wrap up the standard gameplay by guessing “Thermal Underwear,” ending his run with $8,600. Meanwhile, Brown concluded his night with $2,000.
When the regular game concluded, Graham was the undisputed champion of the night, having accumulated an impressive $26,544 and earning her rightful place in the Bonus Round.

Opting for the “Phrase” category for her final challenge, she was accompanied by her husband, Andy, who looked on nervously as the letters populated the screen. Given the standard R, S, T, L, N, and E, Graham then chose C, G, H, and O. The resulting board was incredibly frustrating: “THE_ GOT O_T_O_E_.”
As the timer quickly counted down, Graham shouted out several logical guesses like “They Got Outvoted” and “They Got Outmoved.” She managed one final guess right before the buzzer sounded, but she just couldn’t crack it. The actual phrase was “They Got Outfoxed.”
Even host Ryan Seacrest admitted how incredibly tough the final puzzle was before he opened the prize envelope, showing that she had just missed out on a brand-new Ford vehicle.
Almost instantly, the internet was ablaze with fan reactions.

Audiences took to social media platforms and YouTube to heavily criticize the show, calling the chosen phrase unfair, antiquated, and far too obscure. Certain viewers likened it to a ridiculously hard game of Hangman, while others sarcastically suggested the writers were pulling vocabulary from the 1800s. Many people in the comments claimed they had never even heard anyone use that phrase in normal conversation.
Even with the heartbreaking finish, Graham still left the studio with a significant amount of cash and a trip abroad. However, for a large portion of the audience, that particular episode will strictly be remembered for the prize that slipped away.
For the fans watching from their living rooms, it served as a harsh realization that on “Wheel of Fortune,” an almost flawless performance can still conclude with a devastating defeat—and occasionally, the puzzle truly manages to outfox everyone involved.
