Why J.K. Rowling Refuses to Forgive Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson
JK Rowling’s continuous clash with several major stars from the Harry Potter cinematic universe has grabbed headlines once more. The author recently declared she has no plans to pardon Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson after they publicly distanced themselves from her stance on transgender issues.
The heated debate over Rowling’s comments regarding gender identity has raged for years. Countless fans argue that this ongoing controversy has cast a dark shadow over the phenomenal legacy of the books and movies.
A large chunk of the original outrage stems from a viral 2020 social media post where Rowling reacted to an op-ed piece using the phrase “people who menstruate.”
“‘People who menstruate’,” Rowling stated back then. “I’m sure there used to be a word for those people.
“Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
In the aftermath of that post, several actors associated with the Harry Potter franchise stepped forward to clarify they did not share her perspectives, most notably the lead stars, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.
In an essay penned for the LGBTQ+ charity The Trevor Project, Radcliffe shared his regrets for any “pain” resulting from the author’s statements.
Watson tackled the controversy head-on as well, declaring to her supporters: “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are,” as covered by Tyla.
The fiery debate flared up again in April 2024 when Rowling weighed in on the Cass Review—an independent evaluation of pediatric gender identity services in the UK, spearheaded by pediatrician Hilary Cass.
Sparked reactions online
Calling the report “the most robust review of the medical evidence for transitioning children that’s ever been conducted,” Rowling argued the findings proved “kids have been irreversibly harmed.”
She added: “Thousands are complicit, not just medics, but the celebrity mouthpieces, unquestioning media and cynical corporations.”
This commentary quickly ignited digital backlash. However, one fan rushed to Rowling’s side, proposing that Radcliffe and Watson would eventually issue a public apology and that she would pardon them.
“Just waiting for Dan and Emma to give you a very public apology… safe in the knowledge that you will forgive them…” the user stated.
Rowling answered bluntly.
“Not safe, I’m afraid,” she shot back.
“Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women’s hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatized detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces.”
Her retort set off another wave of internet responses, with dozens of social media users stepping up to defend Radcliffe and Watson instead, according to the publication.
“Maybe Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson won’t forgive JK Rowling for her transphobia. Has she considered that?” one person reportedly noted.
Another chimed in: “This person thinks JK Rowling literally gave birth to Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. So weird.
“But even if she had, that wouldn’t mean they’d have to agree with her. Kids don’t have to agree with their parents.”
