With Heavy Hearts: A Hollywood Star Mourns the Loss of Their Daughter

Martin Short’s Family Mourns the Tragic Loss of Daughter Katherine

The family of the cherished actor and comedian Martin Short is grappling with immense grief following the death of his 42-year-old daughter, Katherine Hartley Short.

Discovered Deceased in Her Hollywood Hills Residence

The family verified the devastating event in a public statement released to People magazine, expressing: “It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

On the evening of Monday, February 23, Los Angeles Fire Department emergency responders were dispatched to a residence located in the Hollywood Hills. Officials subsequently verified that Katherine, who worked as a licensed clinical social worker, took her own life. The tragedy was initially reported by TMZ, with authorities later corroborating the specific details.

Katherine was one of three children adopted by Martin Short and his late spouse, Nancy Dolman, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Together, the couple also raised two sons, Oliver Patrick and Henry Hayter.

A Life Dedicated to Assisting Others

Even with a high-profile parent, Katherine generally avoided the public eye, choosing instead to forge a professional path focused entirely on uplifting those in need. She maintained a private practice as a licensed clinical social worker and served in a part-time capacity at Amae Health. Through this role, she offered psychotherapy, facilitated family support groups, provided peer mentoring, and engaged in community outreach.

Her educational background perfectly mirrored her life’s calling. Katherine received a bachelor’s degree from New York University in 2006, double-majoring in psychology and gender sexuality studies. She later earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.

Furthermore, she was highly active in mental health advocacy. This included her involvement with Bring Change 2 Mind, an organization dedicated to breaking down stigmas and fostering honest dialogues regarding mental well-being among young people.

A Low-Profile Figure in a Prominent Household

While she strongly favored a life away from the cameras, Katherine did make occasional appearances alongside her father at various high-profile gatherings throughout the years. These included the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, theater after-parties, and film premieres.

Her passing represents yet another heavy blow to a family that had already endured the agonizing loss of Dolman following a prolonged battle with cancer. Reflecting on that dark period, Short previously described the subsequent years as incredibly “tough,” observing that people frequently remain in denial about profound loss until they are forced to confront it personally.
